StatSoft NEWS for USERS - Winter 2000

    I. StatSoft Products Now Windows 2000 Ready

After completing a comprehensive process of testing, StatSoft is proud to announce that at this time the STATISTICA line of software is the only statistical software applications now formally certified as "Windows 2000 Ready." In addition, StatSoft technical consultants are ready to provide Windows 2000-related product support for STATISTICA version 5.5 and its sister products.

Since its first release in 1993, STATISTICA has received the highest rating in every comparative review of statistics software in which it has been featured. With this unmatched record and further enhancements using the latest technologies, the STATISTICA suite of single-user and enterprise-wide software is both flexible and powerful enough to meet the data analysis and management needs of virtually any company in any industry.

For more details about Windows 2000 Ready products, please visit the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/professional/deploy/compatible/default.asp (You will be able to search for StatSoft products by pressing the blue "Software" button.)

II. How Companies Are Using SEWSS And Saving $

Is your company data rich but analysis poor? Is your company's important data collected, stored and analyzed by various departments using different tools that are not compatible? You may have noticed that little or no organization of this important data often results in time consuming and repetitive work.

Many of our customers have been implementing our integrated data collection and analysis systems: STATISTICA Enterprise-wide SPC System, SEWSS, and STATISTICA Enterprise-wide System, SENS. The result? Incredible savings of money, time and resources.

**STATISTICA Enterprise-wide SPC System - Real-time Quality Control System for the Enterprise**
STATISTICA Enterprise-wide SPC System, SEWSS, monitors industrial processes in real-time and sends data to a central warehouse where it is automatically analyzed so problems can be easily detected and solved much earlier in a production process. For example, a nail factory can set up an automatic alarm that pages the supervisor when production processes go out of control (i.e., nails are too thick or long). The problem can immediately be solved without the supervisor leaving his/her computer. The data warehouse along with all related queries and reports can also be easily be accessed and shared by factory management, engineers and shop-floor staff (depending on their assigned permissions). This enterprise-wide knowledge-sharing creates a more productive and efficient work environment. For more information about how your company can save money, time, and resources with SEWSS go to:
System Integration and don't forget to view the interactive SEWSS movie!

**STATISTICA Enterprise-wide System - The Ultimate Tool for Business Intelligence/Data Mining**
Using STATISTICA Enterprise-wide System, SENS, colleagues can work collaboratively on data analysis projects and easily exchange results of their work. This innovative business intelligence tool offers powerful options to query, explore and mine databases and perform automatic or interactive analyses. It can incorporate existing data warehouses or ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software systems like those offered by Oracle, SAP and others. SENS is particularly useful for companies who are finding that the lack of sophistication of data collection/analysis tools and the lack of integration of work between departments are more costly problems than they thought. For more information about how your company can save money, time, and resources with SENS go to: System Integration

Perhaps most importantly, SEWSS and SENS are both easy-to-use so even those who have little technical skills can follow the simplified user interfaces. SEWSS and SENS can be used by people without advanced knowledge, for example, of corporate databases.

In addition, SENS and SEWSS are off-the-shelf products that will be automatically upgraded and updated as computer technology changes, so they will always be cutting-edge and take advantage of the newest trends in the software industry.

III. Share Your Story - Win A Prize!

Has STATISTICA helped you prove a valuable hypothesis in your research? Has STATISTICA helped your company lower costs in specific ways? Have our industrial products helped your company's processes run smoother? Or perhaps STATISTICA helped you pick the winning lottery numbers? Your reward? VII. FAQ and Tech Tips

The FAQ section on our web site is a simple way to find answers to questions about STATISTICA at your leisure. Search the user-friendly question-and-answer format using key words to obtain summary information on the most commonly used conventions, features, and facilities in STATISTICA. Go to FAQ to get your questions answered.

In the meantime, here are just a few helpful tips:

**Error message "cannot run XX-bit application"**
QUESTION: When launching STATISTICA under Windows NT, I get a "cannot run XX-bit application" message.
ANSWER: This problem may occur when a program attempts to access an incorrect version, outdated, missing, or damaged DLL file. Expand the following files from the original Windows NT compact disc to the \System32 directory: Compobj.dll Ddeml.dll Ole2.dll Ole2disp.dll Storage.dll Ctl3dv2.Dll Ole2nls.dll Stdole.tlb Typelib.dll Ver.dll NOTE: The Ver.dll file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System folder and the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder, and both versions have the same file size and date. To complete this file "expansion" from the NT4.0 CD carry out the following steps: [Note: it is very important to make sure you have a good emergency repair disk for your NT 4.0 workstation before you complete the following steps.] 1. From the Windows Start button, select "Run" 2. In the file to open box, type in the following command: Expand e:\1386\filename.dl_%SystemRoot%\System32\filename.dll Note: substitute for "e" the drive letter where your NT4.0 CD is located. Substitute the actual name of the file for expansion in the place of "filename". For example: "Compobj.dl_" 3. Click . Complete this process for all listed files. 4. Reboot your PC. 5. Make an emergency repair disk of your NT 4.0 system now: place new diskette into floppy drive and type, "Rdisk".

**Changing from logarithmic to linear scales**
QUESTION: When creating a categorized scatterplot how do I change my axis from linear scales to logrithmic scales?
ANSWER: Right click in background and choose change general layout. Now under the Scales section, change Type: to logarithmic. Do this both for your X axis and Y Left axis. (To do this you highlight X and then Y Left under the word Scales.)

    **Cook's distance**
QUESTION: Is it possible to perform a scatterplot of two variables with the sizes of the actual symbols (i.e. size of the point markers on the scatterplot) scaled relative to the size of a third variable. In regression work, I would like to have a plot of standardized residuals vs leverage, with the size of the plotted symbols scaled to reflect the size of the cook's distance.
ANSWER: Make sure cook's distance is a variable in your datafile. Set the cook's distance variable as your weight variable. Now do a 2D scatterplot and change the graph type to Frequency.

VIII. STATISTICA Wins Highest Ranking Among Statistics Packages in Survey

STATISTICA has once again received positive recognition from its users and the highest ranking over its competition. In the recent 2000 Bonus Issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities, STATISTICA was awarded two 1999 Reader's Choice Awards (more details below).

**STATISTICA is the Top Ranked Statistics Package in the "Statistical Analysis Software" Category of a Reader Survey by Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities (2000 Bonus Issue)**

STATISTICA has received a Reader's Choice Award and the highest ranking among statistics software packages ("Finalist") in the "Statistical Analysis Software" category in a Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities' reader survey. STATISTICA was trailed by SPSS ("Semi-finalist"), and SAS, Minitab, and S-Plus ( "Honorable Mentions"). The fact that StatSoft products have never been advertised in this publication, so readers know STATISTICA only from other sources, makes this award especially flattering.

**STATISTICA Receives Top Rank Among Statistics Packages in the "AI Software (Expert, Neural)" Category of a Reader Survey by Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities (2000 Bonus Issue)**

STATISTICA has received the Reader's Choice Award and the highest ranking among statistics software packages ("Finalist") in the "AI Software (Expert, Neural)" category in a Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities' reader survey. The only other product of a statistical software company that was mentioned in the results of the vote is SPSS' Neural Connection ("Honorable Mention"). The fact that StatSoft products have never been advertised in this publication, so readers know STATISTICA only from other sources, makes this award especially flattering.
