A major Japanese statistics textbook employs STATISTICA

[Japanese Textbook[ On December 20th, 1997, a Tokyo publishing house, Kodansha published an introductory statistics textbook Pasokon Raku-Raku Tokei-Gaku as one of its prestigious "BlueBacks Series." Written by one of the best known and respected Japanese statisticians, Prof. Shuichi Shinmura, this book includes the STATISTICA Basic Statistics module in a 8cm CD-ROM and explains elementary concepts of statistics by using this module. Prof. Shuichi Shinmura suggests that you can study statistics by first using data visualization techniques from statistics software and by studying the theories next. This book will help you to understand statistics and to operate STATISTICA.

If you are interested in this book and would like to purchase it, see the Kodansha Bookclub web site. See the StatSoft Japan webpage for a more detailed, Japanese language announcement.

A new, enhanced Cluster Analysis module

We are pleased to announce a new version of the Cluster Analysis module that has been redesigned and optimized to handle extremely large numbers of objects (cases) using the k-means procedure. For example, on a Windows 95 system with 32 megabytes of RAM, you can process over 400,000 cases (with 10 variables). Further speed optimizations have also been introduced to the hierarchical clustering procedure, which even before was among the fastest in the industry. The updated version is available (by downloading the upgrade) to all users of the current version of STATISTICA.

Support for the Excel '97 files

We are pleased to announce that the current version of STATISTICA supports the most recent Excel ('97 Edition) file format. Current users of STATISTICA '97 edition can download an upgrade containing the Excel '97 support (or order a replacement CD from StatSoft for a nominal fee; the CD includes also new multimedia overview files).

Announcing 3 hours of animated (multimedia) overviews on the STATISTICA CD

[Screenshot] The ’97 Edition of the STATISTICA system features an integrated selection of animated (multimedia) introductions to most of the general features of the program including numerous step-by-step examples of how to perform common operations and how to run complete analyses. This self-paced "multimedia training" is distributed with the CD version of STATISTICA, it requires a sound card and either can be installed on a hard disk or run from the CD ROM.

STATISTICA is "Year 2000-compliant"

Our customers have become increasingly concerned about the compatibility of date variables in STATISTICA with the upcoming century change. We are pleased to confirm that date variables in STATISTICA are fully "Year 2000 Compliant" (by design, and confirmed in an extensive set of internal tests). In fact, they are "Year 3000 Compliant" and "Year 4000 Compliant" also.

In addition to "Year 2000 Compliance", we have worked to enhance handling of date variables in STATISTICA by allowing the user to custom define the default behavior of the program when ambiguous dates are entered. Specifically, as was common in Spreadsheet style packages, STATISTICA by default took a two digit number xx to be 19xx when converting to a year. The 100 year range for which only two digits are required is now under the control of each user. For example, by default the cut-point has been moved to 1920 and therefore typing '00' will be displayed as 2000, '19' will be 2019 while '20' remains 1920. This default behavior can easily be modified by the user (for information on doing this see the Year 2000 question on the FAQ page).

Please contact our Technical Services Department if you would like more information.

A modified graphics file format in the newest version of STATISTICA (a note for users who are downloading the recent STATISTICA upgrades)

The '97 edition of STATISTICA features an expanded graphics file format that accommodates the new graphics technology used in the SIS product. Please note that graphics files created (or re-saved) with that '97 edition cannot be read by the previous releases of STATISTICA. If several users of the STATISTICA software at your site work together and exchange graphics files, we recommend that all of them upgrade their software to the newest release at the same time. Note that Downloadable Upgrades are available free of charge to all users of the current generation of the STATISTICA software.

Announcing a New Module: Variance Components and Mixed Model ANOVA/ANCOVA

We are pleased to announce a specialized ANOVA/ANCOVA module for designs with random effects and/or factors with many levels. This module includes a comprehensive selection of variance component estimation techniques and serves as an efficient ANOVA/ANCOVA program to analyze large designs (with multiple levels of factors) where not all high order interactions need to be estimated. Models without high order interactions will be processed by this module faster than by the General MANOVA/MANCOVA module.

The Variance Components and Mixed Model ANOVA/ANCOVA module is shipping. It will be included in SIS and in STATISTICA; however, it will not be included in Quick STATISTICA. Current users of the respective products will receive free upgrades by downloading the current edition of the downloadable upgrade.

Announcing STADEV, a general purpose library of STATISTICA input/output procedures for application developers (C/C++, Visual BASIC, Delphi, STATISTICA BASIC, FORTRAN)

StatSoft, Inc. is pleased to announce STADEV (STATISTICA Development Environment), a general purpose library of STATISTICA input/output procedures (DLLs) for application developers. STADEV has been released in response to a growing demand from developers who create custom applications that interface with STATISTICA or integrate STATISTICA into larger (e.g., enterprise-wide) computing environments.

STADEV is a very powerful tool that allows the users to manipulate virtually all components of STATISTICA files including file headers, variable specifications, case names, value labels and data. It can be used in a variety of programming environments including Visual C++, Visual BASIC, Delphi, STATISTICA BASIC, and FORTRAN. STADEV DLLs are offered in two versions: 16 and 32 bit. Sample applications:

  1. third party, general-purpose programs for importing/exporting data;
  2. companion input/output procedures accessible from popular applications (e.g., STADEV can easily be called from ms Excel, ms Word, ms Access, Power Builder, Oracle, etc.);
  3. front-ends for custom data mining applications;
  4. various applications that interface STATISTICA with other components of enterprise-wide computing environments (e.g., one can add a front-end to a database that transfers data to STATISTICA files or use STATISTICA data files to communicate selected data to a corporate database (e.g., written in VB or C/C++));
  5. STATISTICA BASIC programs that access data files that are currently ‘not loaded’ into STATISTICA (data array), such as custom applications that merge data from multiple (simultaneously open) STATISTICA data files.
STADEV includes a detailed documentation, header files, and examples written in popular programming languages (Visual Basic, Visual C++), and source code of a large selection of sample applications. Several
example programs are available on this web site.

STADEV is included on the STATISTICA CD ROM and it is now available at no charge from this web site (for more information see the Download Area).
